Anytime you begin a discussion about the History of Sock Monkeys you have to start with John Nelson. It would be more accurate to make that John Nelson and Sons because
John Nelson, as important as he was to the development of Sock Monkeys with his invention of the circular Sock Knitting Machine in Rockford, Illinois in the 1870's, never manufactured a single sock.
It's true! Actually his sons, Oscar, William, and Frithiof started the Nelson Knitting Company in Rockford after John Nelson's death in 1883 at the age of 53.
We will be adding to this Sock Monkey History and Lore page on a regular
basis as we get permission to use some of the wonderful pictures about the history of Sock Monkeys along with the Lore of Sock Monkeys, some of which may be true and some of it simply legend. So stay tuned for updates to our Sock Monkey History and Lore pages.
Thanks for reading, from the Sock Monkey Sisters.
